Each year the Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre invites young dancers, ages 8-19, to audition for the upcoming season, beginning in September. CCDT dancers come from a variety of training, cultural and economic backgrounds but all share a passion for the expressive power and range of modern and contemporary dance choreography that is created by leading dance artists on them and for them.
The two separate audition dates reflect the distinction between CCDT company members (ages 14-19 and including company apprentices) and the Young Apprentice (ages 8-10) and CORE Apprentice (ages range from 11-13) training programs which also include performance opportunities.
Auditioning dancers may be accepted into the CCDT Company or as a CCDT Company Apprentice, with full performance and touring responsibilities.
Company membership brings many benefits, at no cost, including:
Company members commit to an 11-month season. September through May they rehearse, perform and take two technique classes on weekends. In June members participate in the School of CCDT annual showcase and in July new and returning dancers are expected, at their own expense, to attend the three week international SunDance summer intensive in preparation for the following season.
In addition to these company activities, members are expected to develop their technique by attending 3 ballet classes and a modern class during the week, in the School of CCDT, at their own expense.
Audition Date & Time: Sunday, March 5, 2017 from 10:00am - 1:00pm
Audition Prerequisite: a minimum of 3 years’ ballet and/or modern dance training
The audition will consist of one ballet class and one modern class, with repertoire and improvisation. No solos required.
Call Backs will be held on March 6, 2017 from 6:45 - 8:30pm
Auditioning dancers between the ages of 8 and 13 may be accepted into the Young Apprentice Program or the Core Apprentice Program. These programs provide an opportunity for gifted young dancers to enhance their artistry with other young dancers who share their love for dance.
Young Apprentices’ and Core Apprentices’ ten month season provides a taste of what it is like to dance with a company and allows young dancers to begin to test out their dreams. From September to May they participate in one Modern dance technique class and one repertoire creation session each Saturday in preparation for a December showcase at the studio and a professionally produced performance at Fleck Dance Theatre, Harbourfront Centre in May. These activities are covered by CCDT. In July all new and returning Apprentices are expected to attend, at their own expense, the 3 week SunDance international dance program in preparation for the following season. These activities offer the most thorough preparation available for entry to performing arts schools and for potential membership in the CCDT company itself.
Apprentice programs are led by an experienced professional dance artist and guest choreographers are invited to create new works for the May showcase. Young Apprentices are paired with a Core Apprentice and a Company dancer in a mentoring relationship. Many have gone on to dance alongside their mentors as full Company dancers. One of the greatest benefits of membership always has been the lasting friendships that are formed through these unique experiences.
In addition to these company-related activities, members are expected to develop their technique by attending two to three ballet classes and one modern class during the week, in the School of CCDT, at their own expense.
