History
TILT sound+motion was launched on the National Arts Centre Stage to critical acclaim at the 2002 Canada Dance Festival. Performing the works of cutting edge choreographers, TILT specializes in transformative multi-media programs and weeklong residency-style community engagements. Led by Artistic Director Deborah Lundmark, the company’s talented artists comprise Ontario’s only contemporary dance company performing primarily for teens and young adults, with the option of performances for the general public. All performances are presented in regional theatres, enriching the audience’s experience of dance as it should be seen.
TILT sound+motion came
together to reflect and interpret the issues of contemporary dance artists
and to provide a foundation of experience and experimentation for the
emerging dancers it employs. The company has developed a repertoire of
risk-taking dance works fused with elements of live music, theatre and
video. The results are entertaining productions geared towards youth and
university-aged audiences, presented in theatres across the province.
TILT’s dancers aggressively engage themes, subject matter and styles of
movement and presentation that are common to those beginning the journey
of adulthood. In addition to performing, TILT offers workshops, outreach
programs and creation-based residencies to the communities the company
performs in. TILT also maintains a program for general audiences.
Now in its sixth season, TILT sound+motion's performance credits include: DanceWorks Mainstage Series (Harbourfront Centre Theatre), Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival (River Run Centre), DanceOntario Weekend (Premiere Dance Theatre), Ryerson University, Brantford's Sanderson Centre, Peterborough's Showplace Performance Centre, Brock University's Sean O'Sullivan Theatre (St Catharines), and two seasons as part of the DanceWorks CoWorks Series. Over the last six years TILT has performed for up to 12,000 students, educators and general audience members per season.
In keeping with its mandate to encourage emerging dance talent, TILT sound+motion holds choreographic workshops for its dancers. The company provides its artists with workspace for their creation period and choreographic mentorship from a senior artist. The workshops, which culminate in studio showcases, are designed to guide and promote emerging choreographic talent. As a resident company of
509 DANCE, TILT sound+motion is housed in one of the country’s most
important artistic facilities, a home for the intergenerational creation,
transmission and preservation of Canadian modern and contemporary dance.
Through its specialized focus on dance for youth, the company is helping
build not only their own audiences of tomorrow, but those for our
community’s adult dance programs today. As a creation-based ensemble whose
activity is designed for public performance, the TILT sound+motion
company-based experience strengthens young dancers links to one another,
to their art and to their public.
